Blog about a couple in their 40's trying to maintain a relationship
It's hard enough meeting the parents at all, at any age. However, meeting them when you are over the age of 30 is a little easier.
I first met my boyfriend's parents over dinner in the month of March when they were celebrating the birthdays of three people in their family, my boyfriend's included. I brought along a token gift to show my appreciation of being invited to dinner and I wore something very nice and appropriate.
It was a pleasant dinner and they seemed very nice. I was saved over not engaging in long conversations and possibly embarrassing moments. When the evening was over, at a reasonable hour, my boyfriend took me home and all was well.
When my boyfriend and I talked of going away for a week to the cottage, I was thrilled. There would be a few days spent with my daughter but it would be a great family time. Then, after bringing her to my sister's place for the rest of the week, we could enjoy some alone time.
Then he breaks it to me that his parents are going to be there during the first few days of the week. At first I was indifferent as the first few days was going to be spent in a family setting anyway, but what dawned on me was that I was going to spend more time with his parents. I'm talking breakfast, lunch and dinner as well as snacks and after hours pleasantries.
My heart started to race. The best part about the situation is my daughter is going to be there to buffer the silence between us.
I don't normally have trouble with spending time with parents however, these are the parents of my boyfriend. They will be grilling me and sizing me up to see if I am good enough, especially his mother. I think I am good enough. I think I am his better half but I will have to pass the test during my vacation time.
The good thing is that everyone is leaving half way through the week and then my boyfriend and I will get our alone time. Then I can vent.
Till then, I'll have to take it.
